Rotary Club of Middleton

What we plan to do

Each Rotary year Middleton compile a programme of projects, fundraisers and fellowship events that the club wishes to complete for the forthcoming year.  All are designed to ultimately feed into helping those more needy than ourselves.  Progress against these projects will appear, in the following table, on this page in the months to come.

Summary of proposed projects, agreed, for
Rotary year 2008/09

1. CLUB ADMINISTRATION
1. Ensure the efficient running of the club
2. Organise club charter night
3. Organise the Christmas address
4. Liase arrangements for District conference
5. Organise and update a programme of speakers for the club
6. Update and distribute the club calendar
7. Organise a ‘club Sunday lunch’ 3 times throughout the year.

As a sub committee to club administration a Club 75th anniversary committee will oversee the club’s programme of events for its’ 75th year celebrations this will specifically include the following, (with other items included in the club programme):

1. 5/7/08 - Concert St Michael’s Church with Saddleworth Male Voice Choir.
2. 19/7/08 - Springhill Midnight Half Marathon, with members volunteering as marshals for the event.
3. 20/7/08 – Midfest Classical Motor Car and Motorbike Exhibition.
4. 29/7/08 - District Governor’s visit to be held with Heywood at their venue Church Inn Birtle.
5. 31/7/08 - Hosting Summer Campers from 2.00pm to 10.00pm
6. 9/8/08 - Jane’s BBQ in aid of Kenya Water Project.
7. 23/8/08 - Service of Celebration (of 75 years for the club) at St.Leonard’s Church, Middleton at 7.00pm followed by a Cheese and Wine Reception at the Old Grammar School.
8. 23/4/09 - St.George’s Day Dinner, this is a Thursday evening and will be a club celebration of the day.
9. 17/5/09 – Participation in the Great Manchester 10k Run, to raise funds for Prostate Cancer.
10. June’09 - Final Celebration of the 75th Anniversary Year, a Concert in the Middleton Arena organised and run by PP Jeff Lawton, with support from the Royal Northern College of Music.

2. PUBLIC RELATIONS
1. Aim to raise profile by getting news articles in local media every month
2. Aim for a mention in Rotary newspaper / magazine each quarter
3. Continue management of the Rochdale On Line website for the Rotary Club of Middleton.
4. Invite Middleton Guardian reporters to specific club meetings that may be of interest to their readers.

3. MEMBERSHIP SERVICES
The principal objectives of the membership development committee will be:

1. To develop the membership of the club, recruiting more new members that the club loses through age and / or infirmity.
2. To attend to the general health and well being of the membership to minimise membership losses other than those that are wholly unavoidable.
3. Whilst increasing the overall number of members, to strive to bring down the average membership age.
4. To nurture the “Friends of Rotary” within the club, ensuring they are kept abreast of club events participating whenever possible and gently encouraging an interest in full membership.

4. FOUNDATION
1. To achieve the target of Foundation Giving of $100 (£50) per member.
2. To organise fund raising activities to achieve the R.I. target of donating £500 to Polio Plus during this present Rotary Year.
3. To invite Club members to make donations to Foundation instead of sending Christmas Cards.
4. To encourage Committee members and other interested Club members to attend the annual District Foundation Seminar.
5. To request that Club Council invite a Peace Scholar and/or a member of the GSE Team as a speaker, possibly at one of our 'Friends of Middleton Club' meetings.
6. To keep Club members updated on the progress of the two Matching Grants and the proposed two3-H Grant projects.
7. To encourage Service Committee Chairman to apply for District Simplified Grants.
8. The Club Foundation Chairman to keep the Club Foundation Committee updated on the issues raised at the District Foundation meetings.

5. INTERNATIONAL
1. Support Rotarian John Brooker and the Mikoroshoni Primary School in Mombassa.
2. Support Rotary Foundation
3. Support Joe Homan Girls and Boys Towns in Southern India
4. Support Shoe Box appeal
5. Continued support for water projects in Kenya.
6. Continue collection of stamps
7. Continued collection of spectacles.

Proposals to fund these projects as follows:
1. Whisky evening Friday 7th November
2. BBQ at Jane’s Saturday evening 9th August to raise
3. Collect at Sainsbury’s November and May 09
4. Dance at Rotarian Stuart and Janice’s 13th September
5. Race night at Middleton Cricket club 28th February 09
6. Christmas Puddings sales.

6. VOCATIONAL
1. Arrange for mock interviews to take place in local schools
2. Try to get local schools involved in Youth Shakespeare plays.
3. Investigate a programme of mentoring in prisons, then if feasible implement.
4. Invite nominations for then present a vocational award.
a. Investigate possibility of ‘Man of Middleton’ award as a link to above.
b. Investigate possibility of ‘Pupil the year’ award as a link to above.
5. Continued support of the Life Education unit within Middleton.

7. COMMUNITY
1. Support for various local charities as agreed by the Committee (funded from Xmas collections)
2. Medals for Schools Sports Day – Middleton Primary Schools Sports Association
3. Sponsorship of Music Scholarship for Healey Primary School
4. Ongoing Support of Rochdale Childer awards at 4 schools:
o Matthew Moss
o Newlands
o St Johns CE Primary Thornham
o St Michaels Bamford
5. Dictionary 4 Life – numbers to be agreed (@ £2.40 each)
6. Supply complete kit for Our Lady’s Football Club, Langley

Proposals to fund these projects as follows:
1. Xmas Float (house to house collection).
2. Father Christmas, Arndale Centre.
3. Stall at October Flea Market.
4. Tombola stall at Midd-Fest.
5. Easter Activity in the Arndale Centre.
6. Book fair to be held with profits from this shared with International.
