85TH CHARTER NIGHT 2011
President Joan and our Club formed in 1926 had its Birthday Party on November 17th with over 80 members and guests at Richard street Masonic hall.Joan as our first lady President reflected on a prolific year for the acquisition of new members and 5 (including 4 ladies)already joined ;indeed Laura Heywood was inducted by Joan and District Governor David Ellis. She is a keen environmentalist and businesswoman .
As is traditional in the club our newest member Ann Stott eloquently read out the Charter which reminds us of the original people in Rotary International in 1926
David Ellis was fulsome in his praise for our club and wished us all the best for all our forthcoming events. He mentioned the Rotary Polio eradication campaign which has almost reached it's goal of ridding Polio from the planet.Unlike smallpox there are different strains which make for difficulties but good news that India has seen the virus off
Darren Hutchinson (local lad come good)gave an exciting after dinner presentation of his film making career as managing director of Dreamscope which has produced TV documentaries and films (notably of the life of the Hangman Albert Pierrepoint).Recently he has formed Cathay Films producing TV programmes for the Chinese ;short snips of films was shown on a large screen in front of the dazzled audience.(IT whizkid Rotarian John Cannell kept things rolling)
Next year's President David Smithard was so impressed with the evening he stood up and toasted Rotary International!
