Saint Barnabas Church, Shore

The East Window

The new stained glass window was commissioned in 2001 to mark the centenary of the church.  A faculty was obtained in 2002 and it was unveiled on 9th May 2003.  The dedication was by the Rt Reverend Michael Lewis, Bishop of Middleton and the service led by the Reverend Maureen Thorp. It was attended by many local dignatories and representatives from the Diocese. The hymns sung during the service  were 'Christ is made the sure foundation', 'Be still', 'Jerusalem' and  'Angel voices ever singing', with the anthem 'Sing a song of joy' sung by the choir.

It was designed by Littleborough artist Walter Kershaw and features Christ walking in the modern landscape of the Pennines with Hollingworth Lake in the background. The work was carried out by Jaycee Stained Glass of Rossendale.

It was described at the time by Mrs Andrea Sarginson of the Diocesan Advisory Committee as follows, "...the figure developed into a fairly traditional figure of Christ in a white robe facing towards the congregation, but standing firmly in hefty boots and with a thick blanket around His shoulders to cope with the changing weather of the northern climate.  Smoke pours from chimneys to compete with aircraft trails and clouds.  Young people sit, kneel and stride towards Him as He puts out a large hand to gather everyone in.  Sheep pause symbollically, unaffected by the dog that pads forward."

The target of £14,000 was raised by selling six inch squares of the window at £42 each. The names of those who generously gave donations are listed in the Book of Celebration, also dedicated by Bishop Michael.
