Welcome
Welcome to the website for the parish church of Shore, dedicated to St Barnabas.
The church is situated on the edge of beautiful moorland and was built a little over a hundred years ago with the intention of serving the needs of the local community, most of who worked in the mills.
At St Barnabas we value our history and what we have received from previous generations. The well maintained and cared-for building is a sign of that. However, we are not bound by the past.
The church has been re-ordered and adapted to enable social activities as well as providing space for the Sunday School and Church Lads and Girls Brigade.
The East window made to commemorate 100 years of St Barnabas Church, is unusual and reflects the fact that we see Jesus at the heart of the local community, not in ancient but in modern times, walking the Pennines on England’s green and pleasant land.
We enjoy good relationships with the other Anglican churches in the area and also have a close link with the local Greenhill Methodist Church.
The dedication of the church to St Barnabas is of great significance. In the book of Acts we read of what St Barnabas did to help build up the church family, teaching them the way of faith and discipleship. The name Barnabas was in fact a ‘nickname’: it is Hebrew for ‘son of encouragement’.
At St Barnabas we recognise the need for every member ministry and training to equip people for service to enable us to continue to play our part in the local community. To do this we seek to encourage one another in our faith.
As Priest-in-Charge of this church, I would encourage you who read this to come along and see what God is doing here - to find out more about the Christian faith or to consider what part you might play in encouraging others and advancing the Kingdom of God.
Yours in Christ
John McGrath
