Minutes of the Meeting held on the 30 October2007 at the Albany

Presidents Welcome.The  President welcomed members to the meeting.

Apologies for absence. Were received from 8members. 

Social Secretary -  Walter Brisk gave a  list of Members who had booked Buckertree Hall. .

The Speaker - was Dick Badami on ' NW Men of Science'. who gave an authoritive and interesting presentation with pen portraits of the following;-

Henry Cavendish- Early research into electricity.Founder of the Cambridge Research College for Physics - now regarded as the best in the world.

John Dalton - Founder of the Manchesterr Literary and Philosophical Society.

Joseph John  Thompson - won the Nobel prize for work on cathode rays and particles (now known as electrons)

Sir Francis Shuster - worked on passing electricity through gasses. This work later continued by Rontgen which led to the discoveries of x-rays.

William Laurence Bragg - researches into graphite and its lubricating qualities.

John Randall - credited with developing the new improved radar system so successfully used during WW2

Rosalind Franklin - reseach into what is now called DNA.

The Vote of Thanks   was given by John Oldroyd who said that whilst his scientific education ended at 16 years he had no difficulty in understanding Dicks talk. Members followed with generous applause.
