News and Competition Results

LATEST NEWS FIRST

The last competition of the season took place on 6th September with 23 entries for the Cardwell Cup. We were surprised and lucky to have a fine and sunny afternoon which 30minutes after we had finished turned to the usual rain. We comment a lot about the weather because we enjoy playing (and sitting around) when the sun shines. We persevere in all sorts of inclement conditions because we are all mad bowlers! There was another new winner today in Dave Harris who has only been bowling (keenly) for two seasons, beating Steve Sudworth. Semi final losers were Jack Lindsay and Barclay Warrington.

There were 32 entries for the Beckwith Trophy on the 30th August. It was good to see a new winner in Alan Rodgerson who beat Joe Barrow in the final 21-18. The losing semi finalists were Eamon Murphy and Paul Worthington.

The Jessie Clegg pairs competition took place on 16th August with 20 pairs entered. The winners were Kath Harvey and Jack Lindsay who beat Carol Hartley and Ray Martin in the final. A pleasant afternoon with good bowling and weather. It rained shortly after the presentations were made.

Saturday 9th August was the BIG DAY Presidents Day. The weather didn't disappoint as it poured down from start to finish. Just what you expect these days. We wondered what a number of members were doing erecting a gasebo at 11.30am. It proved to be an excellent huge umbrella. There was bunting outside and in, with green and yellow balloons (club colours). Members provided food to make a very colourful and enjoyable buffet. Good prizes were also given for the raffle. Some people went home with a bagfull of prizes. The important thing really, was the bowling, which in the conditions was top class. Forty four members entered into two competitions. For the second year (maybe the third) the president was allowed to play. Not permitted before that, don't know why. Anyway. the President, Sandra Beglin won the ladies competition with Sheila Barrow the runner up. Kevin Hindle ( yeh! Kevin again) won the mens competition beating Bob Jelly in the final. All in all it was a super afternoon. Maybe one day the sun WILL shine.

Joe Barrow and Teresa Fardon were victorious in winning the two Naylor Trophies which were played for on the 26th July. They overcame strong competition from  Paul Holt and Glenys Tee repectively to win  the two  finals.

The Downes candelabra (ladies trophy) and the Gerrard Cup (gents) took place on 12th July. A fine day with not too many entrants and finished about 5-30pm. Ivy Wilcock beat Nikki Mellor to win the candelabra. The Gerrard was won by Jack Lindsay who is only a junior of 12 years and he beat Kevin Hindle. We'll never hear the end of this!!

The annual Bowls trip to the Black Horse at Croston took place on 5th July. Things seem to be dogged by bad weather this season and we set off in pouring rain. People prayed (perhaps) on the coach and as we neared our destination the weather cleared and apart from a short heavy shower before we started the bowls drive we had a lovely sunny afternoon. Everyone had a friendly, relaxing and enjoyable afternoon with bowling interspersed with drink and food.

We held our Hospice Pairs on 28th June and once again it proved to be a marathon affair, finishing around 9pm. The eventual winners were Jenny Jackson and Len Whittaker who beat Irene Muschamp and Dave Harris in the final. The winners go forward to the Hospice final day at Ladybarn. The important thing was that we raised £260 for the Hospice and with donations from teams and the club we will probably exceed £300.

The Merit shield was held on the 21st June and was probably a competition too far as it took 8 hours to complete. It started in the rain and with a bit of dry in between finished in the rain. Most people had departed and left only those involved to finish the day worn out. Sandra Beglin and Jeff Young contested one semi final with Ray Tee and Joe Barrow the other. Eventually Jeff beat Joe. We will have to do something different when we have 45 entrants as today. Put you thinking caps on!

The Pauline Kilroy-Doyle charity trophy competition was held on Sunday 15th June. This turned out to be a super day in terms of good bowling and the number of people supporting the event. At one stage in the afternoon there were at least 60 spectators around the green, and judging from the takings for drinks, Bob Warwick ( mainly) brewed and sold 150 cups of tea  or coffee. The Ladies team provided the funds for the marvellous buffet put together by Linda and which was enjoyed by all who ate it. The competition was won by Margaret Taylor who overcame strong Thistleyfield ladies competition in previous rounds to beat Kath Harvey in the final. The losing semi finalists were Elzabeth Taylor and Sheila Stott. The important part of the day though was raising money for MacMillan Cancer support and the grand sum of £300 will be donated to that charity. Big thanks to everyone who helped make this a successful event.

Saturday 7th June was Milnrow Carnival Day. We had our own with the Redvers Trophies Competition. This used to be one huge trophy donated by members who had gone to America. It was three feet high and a typical American over the top item. In the past someone in their wisdom decided to cut it in two and make a ladies and a gents trophy of it. People still refer to them as door stops but you still have to play well to win one. Kath Harvey won the ladies one beating Alison Purdy in the final 21-15 and Barclay Warrington beat Alan Rodgerson 21-17 to win the men's.

An excellent day on Saturday for the Ladies Rose Bowl and the Gentlemens Cup. There were 22 ladies and 23 gents entered. The ladies final between Carol Hartley and Nikki Mellor ended up with Carol winning. Pat who won last year brought the trophy back full of roses. Really pleased at that because the club roses are late this year and weren't in bloom. The Gents Cup was won by Kevin Hindle beating Jack Kay in the final. Finished at 7.15pm.

Thieves,Yobs,Drunkards,Idiots call them what you will stole one of our wooden benches on Friday evening. Climbing over the 6ft concrete fence and then using the flower planter to climb back over. We hope that whoever stole it gets a great deal of satisfaction from sitting on it. Being wood it will rot, the sooner the better!

Sunday 26th May saw our green in use by Rochdale Ladies, in the Federation. They played at home here against Worth Valley (Keighley to Skipton area) and away at Steeton. There some very good games but Rochdale only won two games, one at home and one away out of 24 played.

The sheet is now on the notice board for the bowling trip to the Black Horse at Croston on the 5th July. Coach booked and menu available from Nikki. We've had two good trips to this green. GET YOUR NAMES DOWN

The John Almond Trophy was played for on 17th May with 33 entrants. Some had eyes on mobiles following Rochdale triumphantly. Our triumphant bowler today was Barclay Warrington who beat Carol Hartley. A few braved the chilly afternoon to the end ( not many of us) for an earlier presentation of prizes.

Good afternoon trip to the Rose and Bowl at Stacksteads on Friday 16th May. Good, fun bowling, on a very tricky green. Just the right number with 24 attending. Excellent food after.

We held the Mixed Pairs competition on 10th May and had 19 pairs entered. The outcome at 7.45pm. (Most people had gone home to bed by then !) was a win for Kath Harvey and Phil Mellor over Kevin Hindle and Pat Charlton. Strike out time for this competition next year will be 12.00pm.

On 4th May the ladies held a charity competition in aid of the mayor's charity and raised £200. There were 48 entrants the winner being May Hazeldene and runner up Joyce Jones. A very enjoyable day in spite of the rain with an excellent buffet prepared by Linda

E & A Holt Cup     Winner - Kevin Hindle,  Runner Up - Paul Worthington
