Pack Up Your Troubles - Celebration in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Whitworth residents will commemorate the cenetary of the end of World War I on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November in remembrance.

An evening celebration in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will be held on Saturday 10 November at the Riverside. Entertainment includes readings by Charles Foster, First World War songs by Freda Farnworth and entertainment by the Swing Commanders.

Tickets are £5 and include a potato pie supper.

Tickets are available from the Riverside, post office and from Whitworth Councillors Karen Ruane, Maureen Jones and Lynda Barnes.

Other events taking place over the weekend include:

On Sunday 11 November, the Remembrance procession will gather at 10.20am at the corner of Tong Lane and arrive at the Memorial Gardens at 10.40am for the service to begin.

St Bartholomew’s Church will be open all day with a WW1 themed café and the bells will peal at 7.05pm in line with the national event “Battles over-ringing out for peace”.

At 7pm there will be the Lighting of the Beacon “A Nation’s Tribute” located temporarily on Brown Wardle.

Members of the public will be able to view the beacon from a safe distance at Lobden Golf Club.
