DETAILS:

From The Handmaid’s Tale to The Power, the rise and revival of women-driven dystopian fiction cannot be ignored. Join Hanna Jameson, author of The Last, and Fiona Shaw, author of Outwalkers, for some lively discussion on the concept of dystopia, and the impact of female writers on the genre.

The Last is the #1 best seller about the end of the world, asking important questions about life, morality, and keeping hold of your humanity despite the surrounding chaos. A murder mystery, a thriller, and a dystopian future rolled into one, The Last has been acclaimed by readers and critics alike.

Outwalkers tells the story of Jake, a boy trying to escape a version of England where the Government can track anyone, anywhere, using chips implanted in all newborns. He escapes his orphanage to try and cross the border to Scotland as part of a gang of Outwalkers. This is a must-read for any fan of the genre, and an excellent ‘first dystopia’ for young adult readers.

Suitable for: Ages 14+

The festival box office is located at Touchstones Rochdale. Open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm.

Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival is aimed at celebrating and promoting the Maskew Collection of classic literature and philosophy at Rochdale Central Library, encouraging people to engage with books and ideas. Rochdale couple, Annie and Frank Maskew, met in Rochdale Library in the 1950s and shared a passion for reading and thinking. They left a sum of money to be used on resources and events related to literature and philosophy to ensure classic works are available for future generations.

Entry fee: Book in advance - £4
