Every year in September, England’s largest voluntary cultural event returns as a celebration of local and national heritage. Co-ordinated nationally by the Heritage Open Days National Partnership and locally by Link4Life, Rochdale takes part by opening the doors to various historic buildings throughout the borough that are usually closed to the public or charge an entrance fee.

Local buildings full of history will be open and free to explore, many of which include differing age, style and function across the borough.

The amazing Langley Cross stands some 13 or so metres tall and is housed in All Saints & Martyrs Church. Sculpted in aluminium by Geoffrey Clarke, it is probably the artist’s biggest commission and was cast using pioneer techniques which he himself developed. Sadly, Geoffrey Clarke died some years ago and since then a lot has been written about his work, which can be found all over the country. Langley is truly blessed to have this breath-taking work of art.

There will be talks on the Langley Cross during the opening times of the church.

No booking is required to attend this heritage open day.

Covid-19 considerations:

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, this year's Heritage Open Days programme has been reduced. This event will run in line with local and national government guidelines at the time of the festival. Social distancing will be in place at all times.

Directions:

By car: From M62, leave J19 and follow A6046, Hollin Lane in the direction of Middleton but turn right into Langley Lane, just after St Anne's Academy. Turn left into Wythburn Road. At the end, turn into Windermere Road. Follow this round and turn left into Wood Street, just before Bowlee Park School. All Saints and Martyrs is the church with a spire on the left just after St Mary's RC School.

Bus no.163 from Manchester or Bury; from Rochdale bus no.17 to Middleton. Change at Middleton Bus Station to no.163. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk up Wood Street. The church is on the right.
