DETAILS:

Every year in September, England’s largest voluntary cultural event returns as a celebration of local and national heritage. Co-ordinated nationally by the Heritage Open Days National Partnership and locally by Link4Life, Rochdale takes part by opening the doors to various historic buildings throughout the borough that are usually closed to the public or charge an entrance fee.

Local buildings full of history will be open and free to explore, many of which include differing age, style and function across the borough.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Rochdale, the extraordinary church of St Edmund's may look like many other Victorian parish churches. On closer inspection it reveals a fascinating blend of gothic revival architecture and Masonic symbolism.

Described by Pevsner as 'Rochdale's Temple to Freemasonry', this fascinating building was created for wealthy Victorian industrialist and Freemason Albert Hudson Royds in 1870-73 by the Architect's James Medland and Henry Taylor.

A volunteer will be onsite throughout, but please enjoy a self-led visit inside the church or discover Hidden Nature outside.

No booking is required to attend this heritage open day.

Covid-19 considerations:

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, this year's Heritage Open Days programme has been reduced. This event will run in line with local and national government guidelines at the time of the festival. Social distancing will be in place at all times.
