Chairman and Founder of Zen Internet says CityFibre investment 'should be good for UK households'

Date published: 24 October 2018

With news that CityFibre is investing £2.5bn into improving the state of the broadband in the UK, and challenging Openreach and Virgin, Richard Tang, Founder & Chairman of Internet Service Provider, Zen, has put together his thoughts on what this means for the industry.

Richard Tang, Founder & Chairman of Zen said: “The CityFibre investment should overall be good for UK households as it should provide increased competition in the market.

"However, one thing to note is that deploying the infrastructure is, in my view, the smaller part of the problem of providing viable competition. The bigger part of the problem is layering a service on top of that infrastructure – something that Openreach has already achieved and refined.

"CityFibre will have their work cut out to deploy the network and develop all the service layers within their stated timescales. Unless they get both aspects right, the competitive threat will be very limited.

"I wish CityFibre every success.”
