Three Mellor Orion buses delivered to Cheshire DRT operator

Rochdale-based bus manufacturer Mellor has supplied three buses to Cheshire operator, Transport Service Solutions.

Sold through Mellor’s partner, Enterprise, the custom-configured buses are serving rural villages as part of a pilot rural Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) service.

Trading as ‘go-too’, the buses are finished in the brand’s two-tone livery and can carry up to 16 passengers with an accessible wheelchair space. Customers in rural villages to the south-west of Nantwich can book a ride between two locations anywhere within the operation zone via the go-too app or by calling the booking line.

“The area has long been acknowledged as having poor public transport infrastructure,” said Ian Mottershead, Fleet and Compliance Manager at TSS. “Our go-too service, delivered by our new Mellor Orion fleet, is connecting these rural communities together.

“Accessibility was a critical factor when it came to choosing the right vehicle for our needs. The Orion’s low floor design and front-access wheelchair space made it ideally suited to the job in-hand. Our rural operating area also provides a challenge when it comes to driving a larger vehicle, so the size-appropriate design, great visibility, automatic gearbox and easy-to-use controls allow our drivers to focus on our passengers and on the road.”

Optimised for use as a service bus, the Mellor Orion buses are closed back with a front passenger-side service door and Mobitech destination displays to the front, side and rear.

Inside, Phoenix Blenheim seating, Eberspacher Climate Control and bell pushes are fitted.

“These Mellor buses are the first I’ve run,” Ian added, “but their track record in the sector and outstanding reputation gave us the confidence to place an order. The customers are full of praise for the service and the buses – it’s given many people a lifeline.

“I’ve been especially impressed by the level of customer service. We had a minor operational incident soon after taking delivery and they sent us replacement parts within 24 hours.

“Service has really stood out for us.”
