Letter: Budget was missed opportunity for the government to provide much needed funding boost for adult social care

Date published: 23 November 2017

Dear Editor,

The budget was the perfect opportunity for the government to provide a much needed funding boost for adult social care.

Not for the first time the opportunity to address the crisis was missed.

Bafflingly the Chancellor failed to even mention the extent of the problem, let alone offer a solution.

The £176 million cuts from Rochdale’s council services over the past eight years has presented many challenges for adult care, as we seek to maintain and deliver frontline services with reduced funding.

We have risen to the challenge with innovative policies like our award winning Intermediate Tier Service.

However, what is desperately needed now is a long-term funding solution, not a short-term fix.

The current position is simply not sustainable.

Expectations were raised with the green paper announcement on the future of adult care. It only took 48 hours for the spin to unravel.

Never mind green papers, when it comes to finding a long-term funding solution for social care the government has simply raised a white flag.
