Letter: Thank you to everyone in our wonderful community

Date published: 02 March 2018

Dear Editor,

My personal thanks to all the  local residents and council employees for working together in a crisis. Thank you to everyone in our wonderful community for their magnificent effort and local spirit.

At Butterworth Hall, John Milne, Newhey County Primary and all the local people who opened up their homes. To Bank Chambers for providing pizzas, for Londis and Go Local offering hot drinks and supplies, for Genesis Nursery opening its doors with hot drinks, refreshments and warmth, and so many more offering hospitality at all hours.

The messages of kindness, generosity and sheer determination, as heard on the streets, on the news, on social media make you proud.

The reaction from the local community in response to the road closures and stranded drivers has proved how marvellous the people of Milnrow, Newhey and Rochdale are.

Unfortunately Rochdale has had some very poor publicity specifically child exploitation.

Our local community in the last 24 hours have and still are working tirelessly and willingly to help others. We are a strong, caring, generous community and should be proud of all  efforts.

A special mention for Steve Motram, the caretaker of Newhey County Primary School, who started at 5am Friday morning handing out food and drink from the school. His kindness and initiative made the school into a refuge for people trapped and the Council then used it as a central hub for operations.

Head teacher Clair Gooding said: “This is very normal for Mr Motram, he is one of our local heroes.”

Thank you.

Councillor Neil Butterworth
