Letter: I have revoked my Lib Dem membership

Date published: 14 April 2018

Dear Editor,

It is with dismay that I have read the first report from the Independent Inquiry on Child Sexual Abuse.

Last year, Paul Rowen (who was leader of Rochdale Council from 1992 - 1996) was out canvassing on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, for the General Election.

The same Paul Rowen, who was conveniently too busy to read reports into the then suspected child abuse allegations, at Knowl View and Cambridge House.

The report found… ‘As with Richard Farnell, [Paul Rowen] was prepared to blame others without acknowledging his own failures of leadership. At best, [Paul Rowen] was insufficiently inquisitive about Knowl View school, despite having knowledge of the serious problems that persisted at the school; at worst, as council leader [Paul Rowen] turned a blind eye to these problems and chose to give them low priority.'

After the General Election last year, I found that the Liberal Democrats was the party whose values were closest to mine, and so I joined.  After the release of this report, I have revoked my membership.

Both Labour and Liberal Democrats have been found wanting and it is time for a clear out within the Town Hall.  Rochdale needs fresh blood to rebuild itself.  This cannot be done by Labour and/or Liberal Democrats.
