Duke of Edinburgh’s Award by Hira Iqbal

As part of Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) at Beech House School, Jamshed Miah, DofE leader and youth worker, took the bronze qualifiers out for a day walk on Saturday 1 April at the Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre. The walk consisted of four hours from 10.00am till 2.00pm. Jamshed had organised this walk so that the pupils could have the opportunity to practise their planning, map skills, leadership and team working skills for their qualifying expedition.

At the start of the day walk, the pupils separated into two teams who were led by two youth workers per team. Every member of the team was handed a map of the area with a route card on the back. The route card estimated how far and where the pupils were going to travel. Each pupil got the chance to lead the group by practising their map skills and directed the rest of the group for a short distance and then changed after a while.

As is always the case in Britain, we were subjected to all four seasons in one day beginning with rain so heavy that everyone was soaked. Once the rain had finally stopped, strong winds had approached leaving the pupils cold and damp. Although the sunshine came out near to the end, the pupils were muddy due to all the walking and the after effect of the weather on the route that we travelled.

Even though it was a bit challenging for many of the students, because it was the first time we had gone for a walk and the fact that most pupils were unprepared and then it had rained, it was a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend students to do DofE because it is a great skill to achieve and is very amusing but tiring because of all the walking.
Nevertheless, everyone is excited for the qualifying expedition and is awaiting it eagerly!
