Year 10 football team take the trophy

The Year 10 St. Cuthbert's Football Team participated in the Rochdale Cup Final last Wednesday evening against Hollingworth Academy. Wearing their new kits sponsored by Watergrove Painting Ltd. It was Hollingworth who took a 1-0 lead during the first half.
St. Cuthbert's then responded brilliantly and were awarded a penalty as result of a hand ball in the area. Musambya Kisimba dispatched the penalty effectively into the bottom right hand corner.

During a tense match, the game stayed at 1-1 and continued into extra time. With just over 5 minutes to go before penalties, Chris Moran scored a terrific right footed shot from outside of the area into the top corner. The game was then finished off in the last three minutes when Musambya Kisimba got on the scoresheet once again with a low driven shot into the bottom corner, this win marks the Year 10's first piece of silverware and sparked excited celebrations.

Rounders teams start the season in style

Unusually sunny weather in Rochdale allowed the Year 7 and 8 Rounders teams to get their season started in style. The Year 7 team made an excellent start to the campaign in a tournament which was a steep learning curve for them in terms of trying to remember the tactics and rules which the PE staff had frantically crammed into their brains over the last few weeks. A special mention must go to Mollie Schofield for her assured and competent performance as the teams bowler and some excellent batting from Katie Taylor and Kimberley Hancock.

The Year 8 team got off to a shaky start with a few unforced errors against Holy Family and lost 9-6.5. Following that they really brought out their ‘A Game’ winning the remaining matches in style with some hits that cleared the boundary of the field from Holly Parnum Taylor, Oyinken Bello, Tegan Walker, Imogen Marshall and Jess Butteworth. The girls were equally as impressive with their fielding with some outstanding throwing and catches.
Both groups of girls now look forward to their next tournament in a fortnight.

LINC News

This week it was St Mary’s turn to experience the facilities within our Learning and Innovation Centre. It was the first of three promotional activities we have arranged for the Year 4 class.

All of the students created a slot for their radio broadcast including a jingle, selling points and an interview about an event in school. They tied the show together by selecting commercial radio adverts and songs to complete their broadcasts.

We also had the opportunity to visit the Cuisine area of school where students had the opportunity to taste our famous homemade biscuits.

Finally, we listened to the radio shows through our built-in classroom sound system. We are looking forward to seeing the same group next year when they will be creating full colour leaflets and making digital adverts to promote their school.

Teens and Toddlers

The Teens and Toddlers group were very excited during their visit to St John's this week as they got to hold the chicks that were hatched within the Nursery.

Year 8 group tackle the dangers of smoking

The Year 8 Decipher Assist group had another training session with Ve Nutter; The Borough's Senior Health Improvement Officer. The aim of the group is to educate people about the dangers of smoking in order to prevent people from starting to smoke or encourage them to stop. During the session, they were given information from Ve about the legislation surrounding smoking as well as a free coaster and mouse mat!

Art News

Year 10 students are well on their way with finished pieces in their Art GCSE coursework. Nikola Terlicka's 3D sculpture of a flower inspired by Henna design and mixed with other forms from nature is proving to be a particular success. Nikola is combining wire and tissue paper to create sturdy petal shapes which are also transparent and delicate in appearance at the same time.

Year 11 Mass of Thanksgiving

Fr Gaspar celebrated Holy Mass with all our Year 11 pupils on Friday.

This was an opportunity for pupils to give thanks for their time at St Cuthbert's, spend some time in prayer and reflection and receive holy communion or a blessing before the start of their GCSE exams this week.

Mr McLachlan was accompanied by pupils in reading the Prayers.

Everyone joined in praying Eternal Rest in loving memory of Charlotte.

In his homily, Fr Gaspar reminded pupils always to be proud to have been St Cuthbert's pupils and not to be afraid to live their faith openly.

As part of the Offertory Procession, pupils brought forward symbols of school life: a bible; a cross; a copy of the Youth Catechism; a school tie and a pupil planner.

Special thanks to our Pupil Chaplains and Music Liturgy Group for their preparation and participation in the Mass.

Caritas Ambassadors

We were delighted to welcome Fr David Glover and Lawrence Bettany from our Diocesan charity, Caritas, on Monday.

They were here to commission our newest group of Caritas Ambassadors in a special service in the chapel.

The role of Caritas Ambassadors in school is to lead our charitable fund-raising and make us aware of any local projects which need our help.

One of the first tasks they have identified is to write to Andy Burnham, the new Mayor of Greater Manchester and to the new Prime Minister, whoever that will be, to ask them to keep social justice issues at the top of their priority list.

During the commissioning service, Fr Glover to spoke to the Ambassadors about getting to know the issues we have in our town of Rochdale and seeing how we can make a difference.

They were then presented with their lapel badges and certificates.

Specialisms News:
Yr 11 Media students are busy revising their exam topic in the run up to their GCSE on 23rd May.

Yr 10 Media students are creating their storyboards ready for the filming of their trailers after half term. Pupils' work is very creative and shows lots of promise.

Yr 7 Drama students have absolutely loved this term's work on Shakespeare. They have been learning about Elizabethan stage fighting techniques and have demonstrated real control throughout the unit of work.

In Music, our male vocal group are preparing for their first performance. This will be a lunchtime concert next term. The boys are preparing 4 songs with full choreography. We look forward to their debut!

Resistant Materials pupils in Yr 11 have been revising for their written paper. Mrs Rothwell is extremely pleased with their practical work so we wish them luck for the formal exam.

Business Studies pupils in Yr 11 can access revision materials form the school website or see Miss Shabir/ Miss Irshad for extra intervention.
