Beech House School Election, to ensure all children were taught the value of Democracy

As the General Election gripped the nation, Beech House School created their own Election ‘promises’, to ensure all children were taught the value of Democracy as part of their ‘British Values’ curriculum.

The children in Year 10 were allocated a political party name – but definitely had no links to the actual parties – and created a considerate and thoughtful manifesto before embarking on a hard-fought political campaign on the lead up to 8 June.

The candidates visited each class throughout their campaign, spending time with the ‘electorate’ and trying to gain the upper hand in the process.

Some of the main points from each policy included; longer breaks for pupils, going home for lunchtimes, finishing earlier on a Friday and more vending machines.

The process was supported by the whole school community, as Year 9 children ran the voting process by verifying names, organising the electorate and sorting the ballot papers and box.

However, after all votes were counted and verified (by Year 3), The Returning Officer declared the result as follows:

• Conservatives: Jasmine Slater and Daisi Daniels) – 16 votes
• Green Party: (Harris Husnain and Isabella Zebedee-Howard) – 20 votes
• Labour: (Jawad Mehbood and Fiza Ahmed) – 25 votes
• Liberal Democrats: (Sara Karim and Gareth Tattersall) – 7 votes
• UKIP: (Mehmoona Naqvi and Adam Deng) – 66 votes

UKIP, led by Mehmoona Naqvi and Adam Deng, declared as victors, stated that they would like lessons outside, allow the older children to go outside of school during lunchtimes, use the school Wifi on personal devices and change the school uniform.

The hard work for the newly elected politicians now starts by trying to convince the Head, Mr Sartain, into the changes.
