John Parker raises £740 for Springhill Hospice with Irish night

Date published: 16 June 2017

John Parker has raised £740 for Springhill Hospice with an Irish night of dancing to Pat Jordan and Finian’s Rainbow at the Wellfield Centre on 2 June.

The money was donated on behalf of John’s friend, Ann Ruane, who died in May aged 79, after battling cancer.

Organiser Johnny Parker said: “My good friend Ann and her sister Kath Quinn helped me with similar benefits over the last seven years. Prior to her passing, Ann asked me to donate proceeds from the night on her behalf as she made it clear she wouldn’t be here.

“Whilst Ann didn’t go into the Hospice, it was very special to her as it is for a lot of people in Rochdale. A lot of her friends passed away there.

“She told me the day before she died that she’d like me to donate the money to the Hospice on her behalf. It was a pleasure for me to give Ann her wish. She always gave to everyone, leaving nothing for herself.”

Mr Parker has raised funds for numerous local charities over the last 30 years and is a regular supporter of the Hospice.

Barbara Lloyd, of Springhill Hospice, said: “On behalf of the Hospice I would like to thank Johnny, Kath and the family for all their support for a cause that is very close to their hearts. Everyone gave so generously and we are glad to hear that they enjoyed a brilliant night.”
