Karen Isherwood and Irene Banham leave Whitworth school after almost 40 years’ loyal service

Date published: 13 July 2017

Karen Isherwood and Irene Banham have retired from Whitworth Community High School after completing almost 40 years of service.

Science technician Mrs Isherwood is taking early retirement at 58 after 24 years at the school and Headteacher’s Personal Assistant Mrs Banham has completed 15 years and will be 64.

Mrs Isherwood, from Norden, said: “I had been a dental nurse and my husband was a teacher. When I was planning to go back to work he suggested that I apply for a science technician post in a school and I got it. Then in September 1993 I got this job at Whitworth.

“I have loved working with the staff and the students at Whitworth because it is a small school and really friendly. I am going to miss everyone.

“My husband has already retired and we are looking forward to holidays in term time – a first for both of us - and spending time with our two grandchildren.”

Mrs Banham, from Whitworth, said: “I am a school governor and I will continue in that role and am looking forward to being able to get more involved in that role.

“Before coming here, I had worked as a volunteer in various schools including St Anselm’s where I ended up teaching recorders for quite a few years.

“I am looking forward to seeing more of my grandchildren and my friends after I retire.

“I will miss my colleagues and the students; I will miss the busyness of each day and the banter.

“I have had 15 years of feeling a part of the lives of the students in the school and I am going to miss that.

“However, I want a chance that I have not had since my children started school. After 45 years of doing things for other people, it is my time.”

It was Karen’s husband David who persuaded her to go for a science technician’s job after having a family.

Headteacher Gillian Middlemas said: “We wish both Irene and Karen a long and happy retirement. They have been wonderful members of our school community, going above and beyond to support staff, students and our school.”
