Whitworth students raise £927 for hospital appeal

Date published: 14 July 2017

Green was the colour to be seen in at Whitworth Community High School as the school took part in the ‘Be Seen in Green’ fundraiser.

The school’s charity reps organised a range of activities to raise £927 to support children diagnosed with brain tumours. The funds went to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital to fund specialist DNA Methylation Profiling equipment to aid early diagnosis.

This is a cause which is close to the school’s heart as Assistant Headteacher Jane Howarth’s daughter, Molly, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and has been treated at the hospital.

Activities included students making a donation to switch an item of school uniform for something green on one day. The most popular clothing was green T-shirts and sweatshirts.

A bake sale was organised by the reps who also got people to guess the number of green sweets in a jar. Teacher in charge of Design Technology Sam Sheldon, assisted by students, held a car wash.

The IT student helper team organised an event where students attended the computer rooms and pay 50p to play Chicken Nugget Run - a video game where you have to guide your fast-rolling chicken nugget along a course for as long as you can, dodging and jumping over a range of obstacles as the game gets faster and faster.

Prizes were given out for the highest score from each year group and that included the new Year 7s who were on a transition day from their primary schools.

The charity representativess were helped by Mrs Howarth, Senior Leadership Team PA Chris Oxford and Student Welfare and Safeguarding Manager Jane Ashworth.

Charity representative Heathcliff Howard, 13, said: “I loved the spirit everyone had.”

Carmel Sweeney, 12, added: “It makes you proud to know that you are helping out.”
