St Cuthbert's Rochdale Schools Indoor 5 a side Champions

The Under 12’s Girls football team competed in the Rochdale finals of the National 5 a side competition on Thursday 9 November.

The girls played out a nervous first game against Kingsway Park, hitting the woodwork on several occasions before Samantha Muzambi had to come to their rescue with a great penalty save and some strong defending from Jussara Da Cruz.

With time slipping away, Izzy Mellor eluded her marker before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 win.

The second game against St Anne’s was a more comfortable game with Izzy getting on the score sheet again (2) and Jemima Qureshi slotting in a third goal. Great defending in this game from Erin Firby, Isabelle Griffiths and Wendy Sarco prevented St Anne’s from any obvious goal scoring opportunities.

In the final game of the evening with both ourselves and Middleton having won both games so far, the girls had to get off to a great start. This they duly did when Rosie Prince ran through the centre of the Middleton defence to slot the first goal of the game.

With Naomi Ade-Coker surging up the back and Rosie and Erin blocking any way through the middle, it created space for Izzy to slot another two goals.

This may sound like a one-sided game, but we had Samantha in nets to thank for three magnificent saves in the final which stopped Middleton from getting into the game.

The girls will now represent Rochdale in the Greater Manchester finals.

Religious Education Mentoring Group

In Religious Studies this term a mentoring group has been available to all Year 7 and Year 8 students.

The pupil mentors helping are Oyinda Bello, Sean Caffrey, Kuba Rosinski and Ewa Hoffes.

We have had some excellent feedback and one of the pupils said: “When they helped, I felt more relaxed and confident in my work to deal with challenging tasks in RE - as a result my work is improving all the time.”

We are pleased to announce that this initiative will be running again next term and is available for those wishing to get new ideas for revision.
RE - Year7 Mass

We were delighted to welcome Fr Gaspar and Fr Kevin into school recently to concelebrate Mass with Year 7 in the Sports Hall. Before the Mass, Head Boy, Bartek, and Head Girl, Amelia, had the opportunity to speak to Year 7 about the faith life of our school and welcome them to their first Year Group Mass.

It was a very prayerful occasion and we are very proud of all of our pupils but especially those who served at the altar, read at the lectern, brought forward the Offertory Gifts or were part of the Music Liturgy Group.

BOB Box Delivery

Today we took the very first delivery of our BOB boxes! BOB stands for Bat or Bird boxes, which are currently on sale at St Cuthbert's for £10 each.

£2.50 from each sale is ploughed back in to purchase more wood for more boxes but £7.50 will go towards CAFOD World Gifts, helping those in the developing world to improve their lives.

Our Year 9 COPE group welcomed CAFOD representative Graham Sivills to St Cuthbert's who brought our first 20 boxes. More will be delivered shortly.

The team will be splitting the orders into 'flat pack' or 'readymade' and will deliver boxes to customers in date order.

Customers who have indicated that they want their box readymade will need to wait a little longer for delivery to give pupils the opportunity to build them.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far. Orders for BOB boxes can be placed at St Cuthbert's up until Friday 24 November.

Lucy Finnigan now Studying for a PhD

We are thrilled to announce that one of our past students, Lucy Finnigan has been accepted onto a PhD studentship in Clinical Physiology at John Moores University.

Lucy will be studying blood flow to the brain in new-born babies with acute respiratory failure. What a fantastic opportunity. Well done Lucy, from all of us at St. Cuthbert’s.
