The 1940s all over again for local young at hearts

Date published: 17 August 2018

Residents at five Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) independent living schemes skipped back 70 years to celebrate the 1940s in Rochdale style.

Clough Court residents joined with residents from Chisholm, Alkrington, Threlkeld and Lonsdale Courts to enjoy a forties flashback as they sang along to old time songs by Gracie Fields and other forces favourites. The knockout entertainment was provided by the uniformed and bubbly Lynne Sheldon who soon had the crowd singling along and waving their flags.

Many residents had also dressed up in by-gone fashions and reminisced about the golden years as they enjoyed tea, cakes (and, for a few, something a little stronger).

Sandra Dornan, an RBH Scheme Manager, worked with residents to put on the big day and said: “Tesco had given money to each of the courts to help towards reducing loneliness and isolation. The residents decided that a get-together event would go down well. Each court put £50 into a kitty for a buffet and to hire an entertainer.”

The day took off straight away with residents getting into the swing of things and doing all they could to encourage people to attend.

Debbie Cookson, a resident of 16 years at Clough Court, said: “The aim of the day was to help residents get to know new people and from that point of view it has been a wonderful success.”
