Reuse Littleborough supports the Red Box Project

Reuse Littleborough has become the latest group to support the Red Box Project – a campaign aimed at preventing period poverty within the local community.

Statistics from girls’ rights charity Plan International UK show that period poverty is a very real problem as one in ten girls (10%) have been unable to afford sanitary wear, whilst one in seven girls (15%) have struggled to afford sanitary products.

The local Red Box Project Rochdale is co-ordinated by Anna Stokes, of Heywood, who took on the role in June, to ensure no young women in Rochdale miss school or suffer embarrassment because they have their period.

The project sponsors and stocks red boxes in schools filled with sanitary pads, tampons and spare underwear, meaning that no girl has to forego her education because of her period, or struggle with affording appropriate menstrual care.

Michael Bamford, who runs the reuse group at the former Royal Oak Hotel, said: “We have become an official drop-off point for the Red Box Project, to support a fantastic charity that combats period poverty in our local schools.

“Sanitary products and new pants and tights can now be dropped off at the Hub and will be emptied by our local co-ordinator.

“Please give them your support.”

Since its inception, Reuse Littleborough has helped change the lives of many people both locally and internationally with your old items that have been kept out of landfill.

 

 

The Red Box Project was initiated in March 2017 by three friends who wanted to give young women in their local area access to sanitary products.

After reading about period poverty in the news, they were angered at the idea that young women were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period.
