BBC Children in Need has awarded a total of £57,000 in new funding to two local groups working with disadvantaged children and young people across Rochdale.

Deeplish Community Centre Association has been awarded £30,000, over three years, to deliver a holiday playscheme for children who live in an area of deprivation.

The play scheme will run a programme of activities and workshops in things such as sports, arts and crafts, drama, photography and promoting healthy lifestyles, to engage, empower and support the children to achieve their potential.

Khubsurat Dunya Community Group has been awarded £27,000, over three years, to deliver a programme of outdoor activities to children and young people who live in an area of high deprivation and are suffering with various disadvantages.

The project will enable the children to take part in activities such as residentials, countryside and forest walks, treasure hunts, camp and bush crafts along with being able to learn basic first aid training.

Taking part in these activities will help to develop their confidence and self-esteem, reduce isolation, encourage healthy lifestyles and raise their aspirations for the future.

Feaz Akhtar-Black, chairperson at Khubsurat Dunya Community Group, said: “We are really pleased to have been awarded this new funding from BBC Children in Need which will allow us to make a positive difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in Rochdale.”

Speaking of the new grants, Isabel Farnell, BBC Children in Need Regional Head of the North, said: “It’s always a pleasure to award funding to projects such as Deeplish Community Centre Association and Khubsurat Danya Community Group that are making a tangible difference to children and young people in Rochdale. The competition for our grants is always extremely high but these applications really demonstrated the impact that they would have on the young people that need it most in the local area.”
