Hundreds of children packed into Rochdale’s Springfield Park to enjoy an afternoon of stories, songs and games to celebrate National Bookstart Week.

The annual event, organised by Rochdale Borough Council, was as popular as ever as youngsters enjoyed a miniature railway, face painting, craft activities and story and rhyme times under the theme of ‘let’s explore outdoors’.

Entertainment was led by early years library worker Irene Peachey and every child went home with a mini copy of Ellie Sandall’s beautifully illustrated picture book, “Everybunny Dance!”

The aim of National Bookstart Week is to encourage children to appreciate a love of books and the joys of reading and learning.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for libraries, said: “It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying a day out and being inspired by reading and the great outdoors. National Bookstart Week is a brilliant way of introducing children to the joys of reading and learning. The sun shone and a good time was had by all. Well done to everyone in the library service for organising such a splendid event.”

Early years library worker, Irene Peachey, said: “It was thrilling to see so many families coming together to enjoy the love of reading. The event was perfect in so many ways. A big thanks to everyone who played their part in making it a day to remember. Next year’s Bookstart event is already bookmarked in the diary!”

Bookstart Bear Club sessions, presented by Irene Peachey, operate in six libraries across the borough throughout the year.
