Liz McInnes commemorates Passchendaele anniversary

Date published: 15 July 2017

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, has paid tribute to those killed in the First World War battle of Passchendaele as the borough prepares to mark the centenary of the event.

Events are being organised across the country on Sunday 30 July to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the battle.

In Heywood, the community will meet in the memorial gardens to mark the occasion and to pay tribute to the 300 local men who died during the First World War.

This week Liz McInnes marked the event by taking part in a debate alongside other MPs to pay tribute to those who served.

She said: “I was honoured to contribute to the parliamentary debate to mark the Passchendaele anniversary.

"People here in Bamford, Castleton, Heywood, Middleton and Norden are passionate and proud about our military history and the contributions that so many locals have made in countless battles to keeping us all free and safe.

"The Heywood war memorial was sculpted by Walter Marsden, who served during the First World War as an officer, including at Passchendaele. He was awarded the Military Cross, and the Walter Marsden war memorial in his home town of Church, Accrington bears the inscription 'Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten'. It is a fitting tribute to those who served, and a suitable reminder to us all to remember.

"I am looking forward to commemorating the battle of Passchendaele on 30 July with the local community at what I'm sure will be a poignant and special ceremony.”
