Jazz on a Sunday summer season

Date published: 04 August 2017

The Jazz on a Sunday summer season kicked off in May by way of visits from one of its regulars, the Manchester-based Harlem Hot Stompers, followed by a long time favourite, New Orleans style trombonist Dave Donohoe with his band, making a southward foray from his self-imposed exile in Scotland.

June saw three gigs within the month.

First up was one of Jazz on a Sunday's earliest Band of the Year winners in the persons of trombonist/blues harmonica player supreme Herbie Hudson and his Maine Street Jazzmen with vocalist Olive Rudd.

Next came The Tame Valley Stompers who, in conjunction with Bolton’s Dixie Beats had obligingly come to the club’s assistance in agreeing to a switch of dates when the band originally scheduled had had to cancel.

Finally, to end the month, world famous trumpet player Digby Fairweather who was supported on this occasion by Tom Kincaid on piano, Jim Swinnerton on bass and Jack Cotterill on drums.

Content-wise this offering differed somewhat from the club’s usual bill of fare but proved no less enjoyable for all that and was worth every penny of the seven pounds admission charge.

July saw three bands visiting.

There was good time jazz courtesy of another first-time visitor, Emily Bacon’s Good Time Gang fresh from their the Keswick Jazz Festival success.

There followed four days later yet a third Jazz on a Sunday first, this a Thursday performance by popular demand featuring the John Hallam/Amy Roberts quintet.

To finish what is best categorised as fun time jazz with the mix of electronic/accoustic, gospel/country/railroad blues, Hokun, semi-skiffle, novelty-come-popular song from the nineteen twenties and thirties etcetera that characterised The Jake Leg Jug Band. Traditional Jazz it most certainly was not - fun it was.
