After their festival debut on the main stage on Saturday at the Feel Good Festival, Rochdale Online caught up with winner of this year’s Battle of the Bands, local indie rock four piece ‘The Recreation’.

The band, who have been playing at venues across the North West over the last three years comprises drummer George Porter from Milnrow, bassist Sam Sumner from Newhey, vocalist Owen Baldwin and guitarist Tom Atkinson from Royton.

“It’s our best gig so far. Being on a huge stage like that makes you feel like a huge band,” Owen said.”

The group performed a dynamic setlist including ‘The Gateway’ and ‘Hotel’ which were released as a double A-side on Friday, and their single, ‘You’. They cite their influences as bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and The Kooks, and dream of headlining an event like Knebworth on tour.

Owen said they were all buzzing after getting the chance to play the festival: “Rochdale is always one we try to get to and I’ve seen some of our favourite bands there over the years, like The Fratellis. To be actually playing the main stage ourselves this time around, supporting Razorlight is an absolute honour.”

Earlier this year, they performed a sell-out show in Manchester to 200 people and have also supported an Oasis tribute act. They will also be appearing at Gulliver’s on 8 September and perform in Sheffield next week.
