Tony Lloyd responds to Turner Brothers Asbestos air survey results

Date published: 06 October 2017

Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd has responded to a briefing on the TBA air survey results.

Mr Lloyd said: “I know how bad the industry was in the day. One thing we have got to accept is asbestos is all forms is a dangerous product. The people of Rochdale are entitled to transparency and know what is going on.

“I welcome the Council initiative to test the air quality; those results are reassuring, but the big test is on the soil condition, which I understand are being done by the company. It is important that the Council and the landowners work to put the results in the public domain as soon as the condition is known.”

He continued: “In the meantime, security on the site has to be maintained. Asbestos becomes dangerous when it is disturbed and we don’t need any unauthorised intruders. It’s up to the company to maintain a level of security on site.

“Once we do know the results – the Council has spoken to central government – then we can make sure we take it forward for a long-term acceptable plan for the Turners site.”

The council-commissioned air survey of the former Turner Brothers Asbestos site in Spodden Valley cost £26,000, and identified the discovery of only one asbestos fibre containing ‘brown’ and ‘blue’ asbestos from a sample taken at Harridge Avenue.

Testing took place at various locations around the site on a monthly basis between August 2015 to March 2017 and was split into in two phases using two different types of analysis. 103 samples were taken in total.
