Hundreds of people paid their respects to those who died serving their country at Remembrance Sunday service in the Memorial Gardens in Heywood.

The two minutes’ silence was solemnly observed before wreaths were laid by veterans, Liz McInnes MP, Deputy Mayor Mohammed Zaman, local councillors, churches, schools, scout groups, girl guides, the emergency services and many other local groups.

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood & Middleton, said after the parade and service: “I last attended the Remembrance Sunday service in Heywood two years ago [last year she was at the Middleton Remembrance Sunday event]. I am sure there were more people here today than two years ago. It is great to see the whole community represented and in particular young people involved, with schools, brownies, guides, scouts and sports clubs laying wreaths. It is good that we use this opportunity to recognise the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces.”

Deputy Mayor Mohammed Zaman said: “It was a really good turnout today. I am pleased so many people came but more pleased with the children and local organisations. It is important to support and remember our fallen heroes in our thoughts and hearts. Those people gave us our today and tomorrow.

“The spirit shown by the people of Heywood today shows that people want to take part in occasions like this. We are united today in remembrance.”
