Ashworth Road landslide

Date published: 09 January 2018

Ashworth Road is starting to crack and slide lower down, also a large crack has appeared in the field leading to Dobbs Wood.

There is also slight movement in tarmac up at the top by Hurst Wood.

Andrew Storey, head of highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “A detailed geotechnical report and survey of the site has now been completed and we are using this information to prepare a number of potential solutions and costs. The nature of the road and its very tight surroundings mean there is not any opportunity to re-open it until it is made completely safe.

“It also means repairing the road will take longer than some people may expect, but we are doing what we can as quickly as we can. In the meantime, we are increasing the number of inspections along the diversion route, to ensure this road surface remains in an acceptable condition.

“We are aware of some further cracks appearing close to the affected area but we do not think this is particularly serious at the moment; however this confirms the need to keep the road closed to keep the deterioration to a minimum.”

The mill and caravan site are still accessible from Bury and Rochdale Old Road.
