Date published: 18 January 2018

A local councillor has been shortlisted for the National Campaign for the Arts' (NCA) Hearts For The Arts Awards 2018.

Councillor Janet Emsley has been nominated for Best Local Authority Arts Champion- Councillor.

The awards celebrate the work of councils, councillors and council officers who have overcome financial challenges to ensure the arts stay at the centre of community life.

Discussing Councillor Emsley’s nomination, the Local Government Association said: “Janet has championed a wide range of activities in a council that has had some significant challenges.”

Councillor Emsley said: "I am honoured and humbled to be nominated for this award.

"I am passionate about the arts and culture. Having been involved with the arts throughout my professional career, now, as an elected representative, I am working to offer all Rochdale Borough residents the opportunity to experience art, music and drama in their lives.

"In the present economic climate I hope that I can continue in striving to keep arts and culture on the agenda through engaging with community groups, professionals and independent artists, national and local funding bodies and others."

The winners of the Hearts For The Arts Awards 2018 will be announced on Wednesday 14 February.
