A man in his 40s is trapped in a vehicle with serious injuries after a multi-vehicle collision between Junctions 18 and 19 on the M62 westbound (2.15pm Thursday 18 January).

Emergency services including police were called to the scene shortly before 12.45pm to the collision just past Birch Services between a white Volvo lorry, a white Mercedes Citan van and a car. The incident has closed three lanes.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “We are still on scene where it looks like a patient is trapped in a vehicle. He appears to be quite seriously injured.”

The fire service confirmed they have sent two pump trucks from Heywood and one from Chadderton, plus the Technical Response Unit from Ashton and the Enhanced Rescue Unit.

The spokesperson said: “We believe a man is trapped, and we have plans to rescue him.”

Highways England have confirmed that lanes one, two, three are closed. Lane four remains open and delays are expected, with traffic tailing back towards J21.
