Are you ready for the annual Castleton village pantomime this year?
Oh yes, you are!
The annual St Gabriel’s pantomime this year is Babes in the Wood, a fun pantomime twist on a once-traditional children’s tale that dates back to the 16th century.
Playing the star roles of the babes – Danny and Dolly – are two talented seven-years-olds, Jessica Taylor and Isla Hanson. Both girls have “amazed” director Councillor Billy Sheerin and Producer Simon Thoughton with their confidence and understanding during rehearsals.
Councillor Sheerin said: “I have worked with many young and talented children over many years during my involvement in local pantomimes. All have been a delight to work with, but these two little ones are rather special.”
Jessica and Isla lead a large cast of 19 principles, including three children’s choruses for a total cast number of 46.
Profits from the show go to the school’ s ‘Children’s Champion” – a dedicated group that helps disadvantaged children together with other projects that help all the pupils.
Councillor Sheerin added: “Pantomime is all about colour, music and laughter, and Babes in the Wood has these ingredients in abundance. It’s a real annual community event with a strong purpose.”
The traditional village pantomime has humble roots dating back to the formation of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in 1977. Billy Sheerin had an ambitious plan, to stage a pantomime in the-then relatively new school hall.
Since the first production of Aladdin, adults have played the principle roles whilst it is the children who provide the magic – something that has not changed in over 40 years.
Babes in the Woods will take place in the school hall at St Gabriel’s. Performances run from Wednesday 14 February – Saturday 17 February at 7.15pm. There is also a Saturday matinee at 2.15pm.
