Relief for shoppers as public toilet scheme gets the go ahead

Spending a penny in Littleborough will now be convenient thanks to a new scheme.

A pilot toilet scheme, starting in early March, will allow people to use the toilets in local businesses, without an obligation to make a purchase.

The vision behind the idea came from Littleborough councillor Janet Emsley and a number of town centre shops have already signed up. Any business signed up to the scheme will be displaying a special poster in their shop window.

Councillor Emsley said: “The response from local businesses and shops has been fantastic and I would like to thank those who are already on board.

“Everyone benefits from this scheme. Shoppers have access to good quality facilities, the businesses get an increased footfall and, in the current economic climate, the council doesn’t have the expense of maintaining the toilets.

“Similar schemes have been successfully implemented in other towns and this will really boost businesses, as people calling in to local shops will be spending more than a penny!”
