Letter from Parliament - Tony Lloyd MP

Date published: 14 April 2018

This week the long awaited findings from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse were published, which has been a big pre-occupation as a major event.

I was out meeting residents in Milnrow and Kirkholt this week, and met with political party leaders and Lord Chief Justice in Belfast under my role as Shadow Cabinet member for Northern Ireland.

A community event at Stonyfield Park I was to attend was unfortunately rained off. I was very sorry to see this given the organisation had worked so hard.

I met a group of women to talk about the transfer to Universal Credit. Representatives from the DWP spoke about the new system, and I’ve asked that any problems are ironed out to make sure the introduction to Rochdale goes smoothly than it has elsewhere.

I met with the Chief Constable about the declining police figures, and the fact that crime figures across Greater Manchester are rising. This is a big issue the Government can not ignore; they can not keep cutting police resources.

This weekend, I shall be attending a meeting in Warrington about housing in the North West, including Rochdale, and meeting with Shop Direct with Mayor Andy Burnham and the Shop Workers’ Union. Shop Direct is based in Shaw, and their closure will affect workers from Rochdale.
