Letter from Parliament: Tony Lloyd MP

Date published: 21 April 2018

This week I went to the 'Dying to Work' charter, which is a campaign by the TUC for terminally ill people as they often have a bad experience with work. I encourage companies to sign the charter and recognise them as human beings.

There was a long debate in Parliament about Syria; this has very much been a dominant issue. Labour’s view is that the government had leapt into an overquick response in reaction to the chemical warfare.

On the back of this, the Shadow Cabinet had a debate on a war power and legislation act. This would mean any government would have to consult Parliament unless it’s a genuine emergency. Unfortunately, the notion put forward by Labour was defeated.

I met with the RAF Air Vice Marshall, who led an operation during the hurricane in the Caribbean, taking real risks in saving people’s lives.

I met with some schoolchildren in London, whose young people have been brilliant in getting rid of single use plastics. They have had real suggestions to what can be done and showed real enthusiasm.

We have had the Good Friday Agreement for 20 years now, and I spoke at a meeting in Parliament on how we can honour it.

I also attended a meeting about elite sports disabilities, and encouraging people to take up sports at a level that is comfortable for them.

I raised some issues with the people who run the Metrolink service and held my weekly advice bureau.

This weekend I will be attending the Mayor’s Ball at Rochdale Town Hall, and be canvassing for the elections in Milnrow and Rochdale.
