Town Centre Public Space Protection Order to be implemented at end of June

Date published: 15 June 2018

The Public Space Protection Order planned for Rochdale town centre is set to be implemented at the end of June.

Mark Widdup, Rochdale Borough Council director of neighbourhoods, said: “Public notices have been erected in Rochdale Town Centre to tell residents about the Public Space Protection Order implementation. This notice period will end on 25 June after which the Order will be implemented as soon as possible.”

The PSPO will give the council (supported by police) new powers to tackle specific issues.

  • Control of commercial or charity collection or soliciting of money in the street
  • Consumption of alcohol in the street
  • Driving/using a car in an antisocial manner
  • Obstructing the highway or loitering
  • Antisocial parking
  • Use of skateboards, bicycles and scooters (not mobility scooters) in certain areas
  • Begging on the street

No Fixed Penalty Notices have yet been issued under the order, but the town centre wardens have been actively enforcing on a range of environmental issues and working closely with Greater Manchester Police in helping to deal with anti-social behaviour.
