Memory box for Rochdale dementia patients

Date published: 21 June 2018

A ‘memory box’ to help patients with dementia is being put together by Rochdale Funeralcare.

The memory boxes help to trigger long-term memories in people with dementia, which prompt people to tell stories about their lives and to reminisce about the past. These such activities may help to improve someone’s mood, wellbeing and mental abilities.

Rochdale Funeralcare is looking for any items from the 1920s-50s, whether it be photos of buildings in and around Rochdale, old magazines, old money, old tins, ornaments, packets, records, or old currency converters.

Amy Saville, part of the management team that looks after the local co-op funeral homes, said: “Being part of the co-op and also a funeral home, we like to help others and get involved in the local community with all sorts of different activities and charities.

“We are trying to put together a memory box which we are hoping to take round and lend to local nursing homes in the Rochdale borough and wondered if anyone had any items, photos of buildings or local landmarks or anything relating to Rochdale’s history that they could kindly donate.”

Items can be collected from anywhere in the Rochdale area or can be dropped off at any Co-op Funeralcare, Rochdale Funeralcare, Clifford Oldham's Funeralcare, Kilpatrick's Funeralcare and Cutgate Funeralcare.

If you can help, contact Amy Saville 07729 153714 or Rochdale Funeralcare 01706 653622.
