Ian Jones wins a place on Team Billy Monger in the Celebrity Superhero Tri

Date published: 12 July 2018

Ian Jones from Rochdale will be doing the 150m swim, Team Captain Billy Monger will do the 1km push/run and fellow Everyday Superhero competition winners Caleb & Callistus from Enniskillen will be doing the 3k cycle.

Big, bold and gutsy, the Celebrity Superhero Tri forms part of the Superhero Series powered by npower - the only sports series dedicated to the UK’s 13.3 million people with disabilities and long-term injuries. Taking over the world-class Dorney Lake in Windsor on 18 August, 30 Celebrity Teams will undertake one stage of the tri each - 150m swim, 3k bike or 1k push/rush.

Superhero Series founder and Paralympian Sophia Warner said: “This year’s event plans to be bigger and better with more Celebrities Team Captains from sport, entertainment and the military competing alongside Everyday Superheroes.

The competition winners are those who shared their superpowers and why they thought the Team Captains would choose them. This year we had over 200 applications and we were blown away by the response. I’m really pleased to be able to give 50 Everyday Superheroes the chance of competing alongside their idols - who have been inspired by their team mates training already!”

The Superhero Series invites people with any kind of disability to go solo or unite with family and friends to take on unique challenges with as much or as little time and support as they need. Gismos and gadgets, from floats and boats to adaptive bikes and trikes, are positively encourage on the course – as are masks, capes and pants over tights. The emphasis is very much on fun.

Over 2,000 ‘Everyday Superheroes’ have already signed up for this year’s event, as well as a whole host of Paralympians and TV personalities.

The Superhero Series is only possible through the support of its 2018 sponsors: npower, easyJet, Irwin Mitchell, Stonegate Homes, Barclays, Quest 88, Blatchford, Physique, Maltesers, Endeavour Fund, PWC and RGK Wheelchairs.
