Second landslide hits Ashworth Road

Date published: 20 September 2018

A second landslide has occurred on Ashworth Road in Norden, not far from where the first one occurred last year.

Andrew Storey, head of highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “A second landslide has now appeared in Ashworth Road, close to the first, which means this section of road is now expected to remain closed until mid-November.

“Once this area re-opens, we will need to close a further small section of the road between School Lane and Hurst Farm to fix a collapsed culvert.

“We expect the road to re-open fully between Christmas and New Year, and will then carry out further repairs close to the junction of Black Dad Lane between January and March next year.

“While we understand that this is inconvenient for people, once this work is complete, we will have invested almost £800,000 along the length of the route, significantly improving the condition of the road for many years to come.”

Repairs began in April this year after the road was closed to all vehicles and pedestrians in October 2017 due to wide cracks covering the entire width of the road following a landslide.

In January, slight movement in tarmac up at the top by Hurst Wood was reported and a large crack appeared in the field leading to Dobbs Wood.
