Party to celebrate woman still fighting fit at 101

Date published: 13 November 2018

Rochdale Leisure Centre staff threw a birthday party to celebrate their oldest gym-goer, who has been revitalised by her fitness regime.

Gladys Radburn celebrated her 101st birthday surrounded by friends and family at the event.

After moving to Rochdale five years ago to be closer to her son Bill, Gladys began attending classes with her daughter-in-law, Vicky.

Since then Gladys has become a regular at the centre and now receives tailored sessions in the gym from her personal trainer, Elaine.

Gladys said: “It has changed my life. I don’t feel 101, I feel about 60!

“I like the company and I like doing the exercises. It keeps my limbs going, it’s hard work but I’m going to stick with it for as long as I can.”

Gladys’ family are very grateful to the Link4Life staff for their support and attribute Gladys’ health to the exercise and socialising Gladys enjoys at the centre.

Vicky, Gladys' daughter-in-law, said: "They have been absolutely marvellous with her, I've got nothing but praise for them, they are all kind and caring.

"Elaine is absolutely fantastic with her and has kept her going. It's also her attitude that has kept her going, she doesn't miss a trick. Bill and I are really, really proud of her."

Gladys first started with a gentle exercise session every Thursday before she recently prioritised a pottery class and now attends one personal training session a week.

Elaine, Gladys' personal trainer, said Gladys was an example for other older adults thinking about getting active: "Gladys had never walked in a gym until she was 98. To walk in a gym is a big thing to do and if someone can walk in aged 98, there is no excuse for anybody.

"We are welcoming centres, the staff are really friendly and we'll offer you whatever we can and find something that is a fit for you."
