Christmas has officially begun in Heywood, following the annual Festival Parade on Saturday (17 November).

The colourful Christmas lights were switched on at 5pm by Mayor Mohammed Zaman, joined by nativity characters, plus Siddal Moor’s head pupils.

Local MP Liz McInnes and local councillors also joined in the start of the festive season, which was organised by Heywood Business Group on behalf of Heywood Township.

A special lantern parade led by a nativity scene filled the streets, followed by a several floats: a Christmas scene, the Frozen kingdom of Arendelle with Elsa and Olaf, the Wizard of Oz plus Jack Skellington from the Nightmare Before Christmas before Father Christmas, some of his reindeers and The Grinch brought up the rear.

A firework display rounded off the Christmas countdown perfectly, as Snow White and Nurse Nelly performed a rendition of December ’63 (Oh What A Night).

Many family attractions were present including festive stalls, miniature train rides, a Christmas concert, funfair plus children’s entertainment.
