Whitworth students raise money for Hospice

Date published: 18 February 2019

Enterprising students from Whitworth Community High School won the best presentation trophy for their fundraising efforts for Rossendale Hospice.

A team of seven Year 10s took part in the Youth Enterprise Challenge when they were given £50 and had to make it grow.

Sophie Brooks, 14, said: “We raised £1,200 in total with £1,000 being profit. We started by doing a raffle and then we reinvested the money raised to hold a sweet sale, which was so popular we held a second much larger one.”

Rhys Hughes, 14, said: “On a Christmas hat day at school we sold hats and raised about £300.

“I learnt that you work better as a team and that communication between the team members is really important.”

When they carried out a bag pack at Bacup’s Morrisons the students said they got a terrific reaction from the customers who were very generous and wanted to share their stories of the hospice.

Sophie led the team but said it was important that all the students involved took part in the presentation, even those who were not keen on speaking in public.

She said: “Taking part in the challenge has made me a more confident person. I have learnt management skills and I made sure the group ran smoothly. If I got the chance to, I would like to do more fundraising in the future.”
