Date published: 21 March 2019

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) held its 7th Annual General Meeting at Castlemere Community Centre, Rochdale on Saturday 16 March 2019.

Chair of REAG Christine Mathewson and secretary and acting treasurer Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE submitted their reports which were approved by members.

Christine Mathewson said: “REAG was established 7 years ago with the aim of improving the environment of our town. We have worked with the Environment Services of the Rochdale Council, Councillors, Mosques, Churches, businesses, residents, Canal and River Trust, Faith4change, Greater Manchester Waste Management Authority, Falinge Park and other organisations.

“REAG members are thankful to all of the above for their continued support, without which they would not be successful.”

The group was awarded the Faith & Community Award in 2013, the Runner Up certificate by the Keep Britain Tidy, at the national competition in Liverpool and were nominated to the Queen's Voluntary Services Award in 2015 and awarded the Community Champions in 2019 by the Rochdale in Bloom.

The group has engaged residents, businesses, organisations, local and from other towns and collected thousands of bags of litter.

One member comes from Manchester and joins the group for the clean up every Saturday.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary and Treasurer of REAG said: “The beauty of Rochdale is enhanced with flowers on the roads, clean roads and streets.

“Congratulations to the people of Rochdale on the winning the Rochdale in Bloom Award 2019.”
