Elderly man in critical condition after fail to stop collision in Rochdale

Date published: 09 April 2019

An elderly man is in a critical condition following a collision in Rochdale.

Shortly before 3pm yesterday (Monday 8 April), police were called to reports that a silver Mini Clubman had collided with a pedestrian on Broadhalgh Road by the junction with Bury Road in Rochdale.

Following the collision, the Mini left the scene.

The pedestrian – an 83-year-old man – was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a collision and dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation.

Enquiries remain ongoing and police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

Police Constable Peter Cunningham, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are working hard to piece together the circumstances surrounding this collision as an elderly man has been left in a critical condition in hospital.

“We have specially trained officers supporting the man’s family and our thoughts remain with them as he receives treatment.

“While we questioned a man yesterday, our investigation remains ongoing and I would urge anyone with any information or dash-cam footage to get in touch as soon as possible.

Anyone with information should call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
