Whittaker Moss PTA fund AED

Date published: 26 April 2019

Earlier this year, the PTA of Whittaker Moss Primary School decided to fundraise for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), to help safeguard the children, staff and visitors.

While cardiac arrests are thankfully rare in children, they can and do happen, and can be caused by disease, hereditary conditions, or even a particularly unlucky blow to the chest.

Figures from the Resusitation Council UK estimate around 270 children die every year of sudden cardiac arrest at schools in the UK.

The AED is a device that can be used, even without training, to attempt to revive a patient, either adult or child.

Jamie Binns, a member of Whittaker Moss PTA said: “The fundraising initiative was met with fantastic support from the parents, and even some of the children donated money they’d raised towards it.

“We were then very fortunate to have an anonymous donor gift us an AED unit, so we only needed to buy the replacement parts to make it operational, and bought the necessary wall mount to position it in an optimal location.

“While we hope, of course, that we never need to use the device, we’re pleased that we can now offer some degree of comfort that we now have this potentially life-saving equipment within reach should it ever be needed.”
