Fundraising dinner to support MARRAS, The Friends of the Durham Miners' Gala

The Hon. Alderman Mushtaq Lasharie CBE, Chairman Third World Solidarity and Councillor Aasim Rashid of Rochdale, UK-PKCF organised a fundraising dinner in Rochdale to support MARRAS - The Friends of the Durham Miners' Gala.

‘Marra’ is a miners' term of affection for a trusted friend. Marras were generally workmates to whom, quite often, you entrusted your life. Marras are comrades who stick together.   

The dinner was attended by Faizullah Khan, Tony Lloyd MP, Liz Mcinnes MP, Andrew Gwynne MP, Cllr Allen Brett, Cllr. Ali Ahmed, Cllr. Faisal Rana, Cllr. Billy Sheerin, Cllr. Jean Hornby, Cllr. Yasmine Dar, Mohammad Arshid, also were present Mujeeb Bhutto and Dr. Prince Ali Dahri.

Councillor Aasim Rashid said: “Friends and colleagues from Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton were in attendance to support The Friends of Durham Miners Gala.

“Our guest speaker, Rt. Hon. Andrew Gwynne MP, highlighted the role of trade unions and how they fight for the rights of the people.

“Labour is a voice of many not the few.

“I was privileged to host this event.

“We also raised more than £500 to support MARRAS.

“Thanks to all sponsors for raffle prizes especially Cllr Allen Brett, Cllr Faisal Rana, Mohammad Arshad, Mudassir Yasin and Cllr Billy Sheerin.

“Mushtaq Lasharie and Faizullah Khan participated from London.

“Durham Miner's Gala is a symbol of workers struggle and history, tens of thousands of progressive, trade unions activists gather in Durham on 2 Saturday of July every year.

“Let's join the biggest gathering of peace and justice loving people.”
