Teenage girl ‘impales leg on metal fence’

A teenage girl has been taken to hospital after she impaled her leg on a metal railing in Rochdale on Monday afternoon (6 May).

The girl, believed to be 15, was taken to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with leg injuries after she became stuck on the railing on Maclure Road, Rochdale, close to the Metrolink stop at the railway station.

Fire services and ambulance were in attendance with two fire engines, a technical response unit, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “At 4.13pm on Monday 6 May, two fire engines from Rochdale and the technical response unit from Ashton assisted the North West Ambulance Service with a casualty who had become impaled on a metal fence.

“Fire crews stabilised the casualty whilst the ambulance service and paramedics administered first aid.

“Crews used cutting equipment and a short extension ladder, and were on scene for one hour and ten minutes.”

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “We were called at 4pm to reports that a 15-year-old girl was stuck on a railing spike. We sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and the Hazardous Area Response Team.

“We took the patient to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with leg injuries.”
